Teenagers are not lazy. Their clock moved.

The shift to a later body clock at puberty is biological, measurable, and largely outside a teenager\u2019s control. Almost everything that follows from that is a scheduling problem.

The argument in a lot of households runs the same way. They will not go to bed. They cannot get up. In the holidays they sleep until noon. The conclusion drawn is usually about willpower or phones, and the more interesting explanation is that the clock they are working to has genuinely moved.

What changes at puberty

Around the onset of puberty, circadian timing shifts later. This is not a cultural artefact: the delay has been observed across countries and, in comparable form, in other mammals, which makes an explanation based on social media difficult to sustain on its own.

Two mechanisms are usually described. The rate at which sleep pressure builds through the day slows, so a teenager simply does not feel tired at the hour they used to. And the circadian signal that promotes sleep arrives later in the evening. Together they push the whole window back by something in the order of a couple of hours relative to childhood, and it does not begin to move forward again until the late teens or early twenties — with the turning point often cited as one of the more reliable biological markers of the end of adolescence.

The practical shape of it: a teenager told to sleep at ten is frequently being asked to sleep at what their body is treating as eight. Lying in the dark failing is the expected outcome, not a discipline problem.

Why school start times keep coming up

Adolescents need roughly eight to ten hours. If the window has moved late and the alarm has not, the arithmetic only resolves one way, and it resolves against the morning.

This is why later school start times have been studied so heavily. The findings are reasonably consistent on the direct question — students sleep longer when school starts later, and they do not simply compensate by going to bed later still. Effects further downstream, on attainment and on mood, are reported positively in many studies but with the usual caveats about school-level confounds and self-selection. The sleep duration finding is the solid one, and it is the one that matters most.

Weekend catch-up is the compensating strategy almost every family lands on, and it half works. The sleep debt is genuinely reduced. But shifting wake time by several hours at the weekend and back again on Monday moves the clock later each week — the same physiological situation as flying west every Friday and east every Monday. It is why Monday morning is reliably the worst.

What helps, when the timetable will not move

  • Morning light, aggressively. The strongest lever available to a family. Outdoor light shortly after waking pulls the clock earlier, and outdoor is the operative word — daylight is an order of magnitude brighter than indoor lighting. Ten minutes of walking to school beats an hour under the kitchen lights.
  • Consistency across seven days, not five. Keeping weekend wake time within about an hour of the weekday one costs one lie-in and removes most of the Monday problem. This is usually the single most negotiable thing in the house and the most valuable.
  • Evening light matters, and screens matter less than people think. Light in the evening delays the clock further, so dimming the room helps. The effect of a phone's own brightness is real but modest — what is on the phone is generally a bigger problem than the light it emits, because an argument, a group chat or a game keeps you awake through arousal, not through wavelength.
  • Do not fight the biology head on. Bringing bedtime forward by fifteen minutes a week works. Announcing a bedtime two hours earlier produces a teenager lying awake in the dark and a family arguing about it.
  • Put the hardest work in the afternoon. If the clock is late, so is the peak. Homework immediately after school is frequently the worst available slot, and the window a couple of hours later is often much better.

What is worth measuring

The useful thing is not a nightly score. It is two numbers over a fortnight: when sleep actually started, and how much it moved between weekdays and weekends. Those two tell you whether you are dealing with a late clock, an insufficient opportunity, or both — and they are the two a household argument is least likely to establish correctly from memory.

Where a teenager is also struggling to concentrate, the same record separates two explanations that look identical from outside: short sleep, or a demand landing in the trough of the day. Persistent inability to sleep, daytime sleepiness that does not improve with more sleep, or low mood alongside it belongs with a doctor rather than a schedule change. Delayed sleep phase disorder is a recognised condition and it is treatable. A tracker can show you the pattern; it cannot name it.
